Education Settings Self-Assessment  Tool (Section 175) & Guidance

It is vital to ensure that Birmingham schools and colleges can demonstrate that they are meeting key statutory duties and following safeguarding children and young people guidance. All settings are being asked to complete the audit on-line, enabling them to provide information to the BSCB on how they discharge their duties and help to keep children and young people in Birmingham safe.

Section 175 of the 2002 Education Act requires local education authorities and the governing bodies of maintained schools and FE colleges to make arrangements to ensure that their functions are carried out with a view to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Section 157 of the 2002 Education Act and the Independent School Regulations 2003 convey the same responsibilities on all other non-maintained settings.

New Audit Model for Section 175

This year, the BSCB has developed a new audit tool for Section 175, the new audit tool went live on the 18th October 2018.

How to access the tool

All schools in Birmingham will have received an e-mail from Phew on Friday 19th October 2018 containing a link to the audit tool. This email will have been sent to the Head Teachers address. Head Teachers are then required to login into the audit tool (using their e-mail address as their username) and grant access to nominated members of staff.   A step-by-step guide to support the registration process can be found here

Once staff have been registered they can access the tool by clicking here
